Ocean Tours

The ocean around Tamarindo is abundant with fish, sharks, dolphins, whales, rays and coral reefs and much more. Watermen and women who want to check them out have a lot of options with our Ocean Tours including Tamarindo sportfishing, Tamarindo sailing, Tamarindo scuba and Tamarindo snorkeling. Of course, we have something for the extreme enthusiast, too, with the Tamarindo Jet Ski.

TAMARINDO SPORTFISHING

The outbound waters of Tamarindo and nearby Flamingo, Costa Rica are the most fruitful for fishing 12 months of the year.  That’s because Tamarindo is close to deep water, those highly prolific fishing areas making it one of the best places in Costa Rica for sport fishing. In fact, the continental shelf is a mere 10 miles offshore and that’s an extremely fertile fishing ground.

According to local fishermen, fish are natural hunters drawn to that deep water of the continental shelf by the bait of the sport fishing boats. It is here that the blue water species of fish abound, including Blue, Black and Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Yellow-fin tuna, and Wahoo.

Fleet-wise, Tamarindo sport fishing has a variety of boats to satisfy any taste. Choose from traditional Costa Rican hand-made pangas to high quality deep sea charter boats fully loaded with state-of-the-art equipment. There’s also the option between a full day or half day of fishing, inshore or offshore, depending upon your desires.

The crews are experienced and have mostly grown up in the area. There’s a commitment to conservation ingrained in everyone, especially in the catch and release practiced on these sport fishing boats.

Tamarindo sport fishing is possible all the year round, but some species are better sought at different times of the year. A cursory knowledge of when and where these fish can be caught is helpful in the sport fishing game.

May through August is the prime season for Sailfish, although they may still be caught all through the year. The hardest time to hook one is in between late August through November.

Marlin, too, can be caught year-round, with a strong season between mid-November and early March, and again in August and September. April into early June are the slow times to try and catch one of these.

In order to catch a Roosterfish, you will have the luck of year round fishing. You may have to travel all the way to the Papagayo from November through March to get one though since more boats are fishing in the northernmost area of this region during the Papagayo winds during those months.  Roosters can be caught from the shore in Tamarindo year round

Starting in the rainy season in May, you’ll be able to hook a Wahoo in the area. This will go on through August. This fish is caught around the rocky points and islands, but come inshore and you may be able to snag one on occasion.

Beautiful tuna can be found all year-round, although they have peak months of August through October. They can be found less than 30 minutes from the beach.

Dolphin fish, or dorado, can be captured during the rainy season of April through September when the seas are calm and it may rain in the afternoon. They are also catchable during the windy High Season of December through March as long as boats move south.
